Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about SoftSmile Aligners.
Do I really need to wear my aligners 22 hours a day?
Yes. Most orthodontists recommend 20–22 hours per day—remove them only to eat, drink anything but water, and brush. Wearing them less can slow progress and may cause teeth to shift so the next tray doesn’t fit. That can lead to a longer treatment, extra refinement trays, or needing to restart.
Does it hurt to wear clear aligners?
You may feel pressure or soreness, especially for 1–3 days after switching to a new tray. That’s normal and means teeth are moving. Discomfort usually fades as you adjust. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if needed.
Can I eat or drink with the aligners in?
No. Remove aligners to eat or drink anything except plain water. Eating can damage trays; drinks can stain them and increase cavity risk. Avoid hot drinks with aligners in, since heat can warp the plastic. Brush before putting trays back in.
How do I clean and care for my aligners?
Rinse with lukewarm water whenever you remove them (never hot). You can use cleaning tablets or crystals or mild, unscented soap for a deeper clean. Store aligners in their case when not wearing.
What should I do if I lose or break an aligner?
Contact your orthodontist/provider as soon as possible. Until you get instructions, wear your previous tray to prevent shifting. Don’t jump to the next tray unless your provider tells you to.
How long does clear aligner treatment take, start to finish?
Most treatments take 12–18 months. Minor cases can be around 6 months, and more complex cases may take 18–24 months. Timing depends on case complexity and wear time. Many people see changes within the first few months, but refinements can extend the total timeline.
Will I need to wear a retainer after my aligner treatment is done?
Yes. Retainers help prevent teeth from shifting back. Many providers recommend full-time wear for a short period, then nightly long term. Skipping retainers can undo progress.
Will clear aligners affect how I talk, and will people notice I’m wearing them?
Most people won’t notice them. You might have a slight lisp for a few days at the start or when switching trays, but it usually improves quickly as your mouth adapts. Reading aloud can speed up the adjustment.
What are “attachments,” and will I need them?
Attachments are small tooth-colored bumps bonded to certain teeth to help aligners grip and move teeth more precisely (for example, rotations or vertical movement). In most cases, treatment plans include attachments. They’re removed at the end without damaging teeth. Some patients may also need elastics for bite correction.
Are clear aligners safe for my health? What are they made of?
Yes. Aligners are made from medical-grade, BPA-free plastic and are designed for oral use. The main health factor is hygiene, aligners can trap plaque if you don’t clean trays and teeth, which can increase cavity or gum risk.
Who is a good candidate for clear aligners? Are they suitable for teens and adults?
Many teens and adults are good candidates as long as their teeth and gums are healthy. Aligners often work best for mild to moderate crowding, spacing, and bite issues. Some more complex cases can also be treated with aligners or a hybrid approach (a combination of braces and aligners). A consultation will confirm what’s most appropriate for your case.
How often do I have to change to a new aligner tray?
Most patients switch trays every two weeks, depending on the treatment plan and your doctor’s instructions. Wear each tray for the full scheduled time before moving on, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
How much do clear aligners cost, and does insurance cover them?
Costs vary based on case complexity and treatment length, and many dental offices price aligners similarly to braces. Some dental insurance plans with orthodontic benefits may cover part of treatment. Many offices offer monthly payment plans and accept HSA/FSA. The best way to get an exact estimate is a consultation with your doctor and a personalized treatment plan.
Do clear aligners work as well as braces, and what are the advantages?
For many cases, aligners can achieve results similar to braces. Key advantages are that they’re removable for eating and brushing and often require fewer visits. The main tradeoff is compliance: results depend on wearing them as directed.
How often will I need to visit my orthodontist during aligner treatment?
Most patients have check-ins about every 6–8 weeks. Visits confirm tracking and handle attachments or elastics if needed. Some doctors offer remote monitoring, reducing in-person visits unless a problem comes up.
